Welcome to the Whipple Weekly
We are thrilled to welcome everyone to SSM's 159th school year! The Whipple Weekly lands in the inboxes of our parents, students, faculty, staff, and trustees every Thursday afternoon when school is in session. It is full of school news, links to other interesting resources (and photos!), and serves as a reminder for upcoming events. There are birthday lists and weekly meal menus. We hope you enjoy the Whipple Weekly and will share any feedback or story ideas with us. Your SSM Communications Team - Amy Wolf (, Megan Maschoff (megan.maschoff@ and Ryan Cardarella (

Opening Chapel Under Open Skies
The Opening Chapel service for our 159th school year took place after a picnic dinner on August 24th. Mr. Stoneman opened the service with a prayer from Thomas Merton and several students and members of our faculty/staff offered personal reflections.

Orientation 2016

The Middle School began the school year with an overnight to Singing Hills Camp, outside of Waterville, MN. The weather was terrific and allowed for great water activities including kayaking, swimming, and paddle boarding.

Students and faculty got to know each other, share meals together and play some fun activities such as Gaga Ball, Flag Tag, and Mingle. Most importantly, students are now in their Marzetti Family teams, and ready for the year-long competition among the teams!

Orientation days for the Upper School were scheduled based on grade level. The 10th graders had CPR training and packed meals at Feed My Starving Children, the 11th graders also had CPR training and spent time at River Bend Nature Center in Faribault, and our 12th graders participated in health and wellness training along with spending time at the SSM low and high ropes courses. In addition, there was a competitive scavenger hunt on campus Thursday evening, Sabre Team Olympics Friday evening, and the 27-Hour Film Fest on Friday and Saturday.

Student Government Carnival
The Student Government organized a school-wide Carnival, held on Saturday afternoon. There was the ever-popular dunk tank featuring students and faculty members as dunkees, the big slide, games, cotton candy, ice cream, and the popular Smoqehouse food truck. The Carnival serves as a fundraiser for Student Government as well as an opportunity for kids of all ages to have some fun.
First Annual 27-Hour Film Fest
This year during Orientation, the upper school students embarked on a 27-hour challenge to create a short (under two minutes) film that included a clothespin and the line, "How long have you been standing there." The students were divided into their Sabre Team groups for this project. On Saturday night, 36 short films were premiered in Newhall Auditorium and awards presented to category winners. Please enjoy viewing the award-winning videos.
