Girls U16 Hockey Wins National Tournament

On the bus ride up to Blaine, Minn., the SSM Girls U16 hockey team knew exactly what they needed at the CCM National Invitational Tournament – four wins. By the time they loaded the bus to head back to campus, they had accomplished just that. The Sabres first took the ice against the Madison Capitals, whom they beat 3-0 to start off the tournament. The next two games brought two more SSM victories – 5-2 against Chicago Young Americans and 4-2 against Little Caesars. A 4-1 win against HoneyBaked in the championship game sealed the deal for the Sabres, crowning them the CCM NIT champions.

ScholarShift Stories: Numbers Shouldn't Lie

Though you have likely heard the popular saying, “numbers don’t lie,” it’s also true that research statistics are often collected and applied in misleading or incorrect ways. With that concept in mind, Math and Science Instructor James Taylor led a ScholarShift module that guided students through a foundational method to help them gather solid research data through the use of statistics.

After studying and discussing the methodology of gathering trustworthy data during the module’s first two October sessions, Taylor asked participants to poll 30 SSM students on who they planned to vote for in Monday’s mock presidential election. Read more.

Deep Dive and Dessert

Students, faculty, and staff members enjoyed the second installment of Deep Dive and Dessert with Middle School English Instructor Edward McKinely on Wednesday, October 26 in the weCreate Studio. During the Deep Dive session, McKinely discussed his creative work, his healing journey, and shared his favorite dessert, "Blondies" with the audience. In addition to being a SSM teacher, McKinely is also a writer and ordained interspiritual minister. His first book, Boy in the Ivy: The Inner Child of a Buried Man, is a memoir of depression, suicide loss, and the renewal of hope. Later this year, he will release Reclaiming My Spirit: Beyond the God of Shame, the next installment in his ongoing journey toward healing.
