Saturday night the Vocal Performance Program presents Wagner, Verdi, and more: Music for Big Voices, a concert featuring beautiful music brought to life by the grand voices of Marla Fogderud, Russell Svenningsen, and Debra Reid. The concert is free to students, staff, faculty, and the general public.
Honoring Service Above Self

The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall arrived in Faribault last Wednesday afternoon and was set up at the Rice County Fairgrounds. From Thursday through Monday afternoon, the Wall solemnly stood as a testament to those individuals who gave their lives in service to the United States during the Vietnam War. The Wall was staffed by a large group of volunteers and attracted many visitors from the regional area. It is a mobile replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. and is taken to various locations throughout the country. Click here for more information.

On Saturday and Sunday afternoon, members of the Crack Squad stood at attention in the special tent set up to honor Prisoners of War (POW). In addition, they found the names of six Shattuck School alumni who died while serving their country during the Vietnam era and created etchings of their names to share with their families.

ScholarShift Stories: How SSM Memorializes War

Over Labor Day weekend, several Shattuck-St. Mary’s students participated in a pop-up module that explored how the School and city memorializes war. Led by Upper School English Instructor Laura Stelter and Rev. Colin Snow Maltbie, students examined several war memorials on the SSM campus, discussed how a society responds to the collective trauma of war conflict, and read the poem “Facing It” by Yusef Komunyakaa for additional perspective.

Later in the weekend, students also had the opportunity to visit Faribault’s Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, meet with American war veterans, and create their own responses to the experience through poetry and the design of their own memorials. Throughout the year, SSM students engage in a series of modules taught by faculty and staff members. Each module is an interactive, inspiring learning experience that exposes students to new skills, ideas, and areas of thought.

The Major Explores SEA LIFE Aquarium

Members of Shattuck-St. Mary’s The Major spent their Labor Day exploring the SEA LIFE Aquarium, located inside of the Mall of America, on Monday, September 5. Led by Director of The Major Craig Peck and Payton Sender ’18, who has conducted extensive marine biology research, the students enjoyed exhibits that examined thousands of sea creatures, including sharks, sea turtles, rays, jellyfish, and more.

The Major is SSM’s newest Center of Excellence, and allows participating students to develop and undertake a series of dynamic experiences designed around their own personal interests. Each student is a member of a cohort of fellow students whom they support and challenge under the guidance of a dedicated faculty member who provides structure, guidance, and mentorship throughout the whole program. For additional information, visit The Major on the SSM website.
