PLAYER SPOTLIGHT!
Street Soccer Bay Area’s Norman Ruano-Rodriguez who proves that a little investment is all it takes to help actualize an individual’s potential!
(written by Natalie Rosekrans)

Norman Ruano-Rodriguez’s recent job offer highlights the interconnectedness of non-profit social enterprises and businesses that are all devoted to the greater good.

Norman joined the national non-profit Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) as a player for the Bay Area team in 2011. Street Soccer USA’s mission is to deliver a life skills curriculum through soccer to men and women residing at homeless shelters, rehab centers, youth service centers and agencies that serve the homeless and poor.

Residents from Larkin Street Youth and St. Vincent de Paul Multi-Service Center comprise the core group of players with SSUSA Bay Area. Shortly after joining the program in San Francisco, Norman was referred by coach Antoine Lagarde to the San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC), a joint work and education program, where Antoine is a teacher.

The Bay Area chapter of Street Soccer USA also operates I PLAY FOR SF, a men’s and co-ed adult soccer league which operates 3 nights a week in San Francisco. The league, whose profits support the social mission of SSUSA began in 2012 with 10 teams and by early 2013 has grown to over 60 teams. One prominent team in the league is “The Photons,” made up of employees from SolarCity. SolarCity installs solar panels to homes and business across the United States.

How does all of this fit together?

By joining Street Soccer Bay Area and being a part of a team, Norman developed employable skills, like showing up on time, working well with others and self-confidence. He stayed connected with his coach, teacher and mentor, Antoine, which helped him complete his program at the San Francisco Conservation Corps. Norman’s appreciation for the environment solidified as he completed recycling projects, landscaping, and general greening of the city as a member of the SFCC. After graduating from the SFCC, Norman was hired by SolarCity to input solar panels. Norman says he thought it would be great to contribute to the environment and now has that chance with SolarCity.

The league fees that “The Photons” pay to play in I PLAY FOR SF are creating a direct return for their company in the form of people like Norman.

Chris Wondolowski Scores More than Just Goals with â€œOne Goal at a Time”
(written by Chandrima Chatterjee, edited by Rob Cann)

Chris Wondolowski, Major League Soccer’s leading goal scorer for the past three seasons, has partnered with Street Soccer USA to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in the Bay Area through the “One Goal at a Time” campaign. For every goal Wondolowski scored in 2012 MLS season, Chris pledged $100 to Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) and asked fans to join his mission. The San Jose Earthquakes forward and 2012 MLS Most Valuable Player capped the highly successful year in which he tied the MLS record for most goals in a season, by reaching the coveted “designated player.”

The 1 Goal at a Time 2012 campaign concluded in December with Chris Wondolowski presenting a $5400 check to Street Soccer USA and total donations from the One Goal at a Time topping $17,631!  Chris has also served as honorary assistant coach for Street Soccer Bay Area at a number of practices throughout the past two years, offering fun coaching advice, exciting soccer drills, signed t-shirts and even holiday gifts to the players, all along with his trademark positive attitude.

Street Soccer Bay Area’s Carlos Palacio was thrilled to see one of his favorite players join his squad during a practice and found himself going one-on-one with Wondolowski in goal! "It was great playing with Chris. It was great to pass with him and score a goal against him," said Palacio.

"It means the world to our players. We try to tell our team to make positive decisions every day. To have somebody like Chris, who is an amazing player and an easy guy to talk to, come out to practice really changes the dimensions for our players. It shows that professional athletes want to see them improve their lives." Street Soccer USA National Director, Rob Cann.

We are very lucky that Chris Wondolowski found us himself and immediately took on a leadership role in the community as one of the first MLS Ambassadors. “It’s a distinct honor to give the homeless youth of San Francisco Bay Area access to a program like Street Soccer USA” said Chris Wondolowski of his involvement.

His community leadership extends beyond Street Soccer USA – he also serves as an ambassador with Nike's N7 program, which aims to bring sports to Native American communities. Chris is a true champion of communities in need of a voice. "Seeing our sport make a difference in the lives of the homeless reminds me why I love soccer so much" -- Chris Wondolowski, Street Soccer USA National Ambassador,
MLS Scoring Champ ‘10,'11, ‘12
