You Always Have Two Choices

Though Proverbs reminds us that wisdom begins with the Lord, sometimes it’s easier to depend on our own knowledge.

Revive Our Hearts Ambassador Jeannie Vogel challenges you to seek the Lord’s wisdom in every situation.
By Numbers 9:6–8, Moses had been leading the children of Israel for over two years. He certainly had a few dusty miles of experience under his sandals. Two men approached him with a question about whether they could eat the Passover meal after being defiled. Seems like a simple question. Surely as a teacher of the law, Moses could clarify this small point himself. But Moses’ response in verse 8 startled me:

“And Moses said to them, ‘Stand still that I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you.’”

Even in this small matter, Moses consulted God. Moses learned early in life that leading impetuously or independently was unwise. To be a good leader you must be God-dependent, not self-sufficient.

As a leader, you will always have two choices.
  1. Depend on your great reservoir of knowledge, skill, and experience to make decisions and plan their course of action.
  2. Humbly go to God for wisdom and understanding in every decision and on every occasion. Only one path, found in Proverbs 3:5–6, will lead to becoming a wise leader.

Profile of a Leader on Mission

Carrie Bond first encountered Revive Our Hearts on a personal level at True Woman ’10 in Fort Worth, Texas. That conference was a “significant marker” that helped Carrie and her team lay some “intentional, core pieces” into their women’s ministry.
Carrie is a pastor’s wife of nearly thirty years, and she has almost twenty years of experience leading the women’s ministry team at Greenwood Baptist Church in Weatherford, Texas. After the Revive Our Hearts Prayer-Saturated Ministry webinar, Carrie and her team were inspired by God to launch AWAKEN: GBC Women Pray. Carrie says they’re “asking God to awaken our hearts to pray, to saturate our lives with prayer, and to create a culture filled with praying women!” For your inspiration, she shared with us the four ways women can participate.
  1. AWAKEN 714: Set your alarm(s) for 7:14 (a.m., p.m., or both). Each day at that time you will be reminded to pray and know that other women in the church family are praying, too.
  2. AWAKEN Prayer Posts: Pray for prayer requests shared on the AWAKEN Facebook group.
  3. AWAKEN in Small Group Bible Studies: Attend one of the five women’s Bible studies, where each week time is devoted to praying together for our nation, our church, and the needs of those we know.
  4. AWAKEN Hour: Meet with women on the first and third Tuesdays of the month to simply pray. During the hour, with a background of quiet worship music, we will pray— individually and in groups.
In whatever capacity you serve the Lord—as a Bible study leader or disaster relief coordinator—wisdom plays a crucial role. Carrie emphasizes the importance of seeking the Lord for wisdom in every area of her life and ministry. She offered this encouragement for gaining wisdom in your own area of ministry:
Get in the Word. Stay in the Word. Allow His truths to saturate your heart and mind. Ask the Lord for the desire and ability to follow through on being committed and faithful to being in His Word (Phil. 2:13). Then ask and keep asking God for wisdom (James 1:5).

He longs for us to depend on Him. Surround yourself with team members and mentors who are striving to walk and lead with a dependence on God’s wisdom. Remember, He loves the people you’ve been called to minister to even more than you do. When we lead with God’s wisdom, we will ultimately shine the light on Him!

Timeless Resources for Our Times

Seeking Him is a twelve-week interactive study that will help you grow in wisdom and faith. Cowritten by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and Tim Grissom, this resource will help you to experience personal revival and heart transformation.
Seeking Him revealed the depth of issues I had never addressed from earlier years. The lessons probed deeply and showed me I couldn't grow deeper in my relationship with God or have vital relationships with others when I was building walls of protection and harboring anger toward others.

It was life-changing on many levels. I'm still learning, forgiving, and asking forgiveness, but it has given me a better understanding of how God expects total honesty and transparency. It is a resource I return to and recommend often. —Ambassador Kisti Huffman, West Virginia
