Now is the time for independents to challenge the traditional networks
Every year, the leading agency search consultants gather for three days behind closed doors at the Adforum Summit, to meet the heads of the major holding companies and their creative networks. The dinosaurs pay a small fortune for the search consultants’ undivided attention, because they are the people who manage pitches worth literally billions of dollars in billings for the winners. Last year, for the first time, thenetworkone co-ordinated a special and unique session specifically for independent agencies. Talent is important: size is not.
Last year, it had to be virtual - but it was still a great success.
This year, from November 1st – 3rd, the European edition will be LIVE AND IN PERSON. It’s in London, which is now once again open for quarantine-free business travel from most major European countries in Northern and Central Europe. Demand for agency places is certain to exceed supply: register your interst ASAP by contacting Julian Boulding.

Mediology shares a peek into the future
South African media agency, Mediology, has recently published some insights into the future of the country, our industry, and the wider world, post-pandemic. Here are their findings:
Politics will become more turbulent. Covid has raised questions around government competence. Activism has increased and people are asking questions about government spending and corporate bailouts. Governments across the world will be held to high scrutiny.
The importance of connectivity and high-speed internet is critical with expectations of an enhanced network coming to the fore. Connectivity is shifting from a need to a right, and for many is directly tied to their income potential.
The rebuilding of the food system. Food scarcity versus stockpiling became evident during the pandemic. Food insecurity is a very real fear for many people and the issues encountered with the supply chain due to Covid (and more recently, the riots) shone a light on this. Many people embraced growing food in their homes however, this is not enough to ease the burden on the supply chain.
The accelerated use of robots. The pandemic highlighted the need for automated services with reduced contaminant risk.
Telemedicine is here to stay. Gone are the days of piling into a waiting room with a handful of other infected people. More and more appointments and diagnosing will take place online, easing the burden on already over capacity health care institutions and staff.
Disruption will continue to accelerate in areas that were beginning to see a shift pre-pandemic. Notably the education sector. Tertiary institutions, primarily universities are anticipated to evolve into unrecognisable entities.
Environmental awareness. Many companies are recognising that travel does not need to take place as frequently as it did previously. Commuting is decreasing and people have had the time to be mindful about the role the environment plays in their lives and how essential it is to life as we know it.
Crowd-apathy. Crowds and crowded places are seen as anxiety-inducing with many people opting for small, more intimate gatherings. What does this mean for concerts and stadiums that historically saw big numbers packed into stadiums?
Greater engagement about social issues and continued peaks in news viewing/readership.
Mediology also recommend watching The Culture & Trends Report from the Cannes Lions 2021. This >20 min video provides some interesting insights about the way society evolved with the pandemic, what was a product of the moment, and what is here to stay. View here:
