Sarcoma Awareness Month
July is Sarcoma Awareness Month, so what is sarcoma?
Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the supporting tissues of the body. Supporting tissues include bone, cartilage, tendons, fat and muscle. There are 2 main types of sarcoma:
  • soft tissue sarcoma
  • bone sarcoma (also called primary bone cancer)
Sarcoma UK are organising picnics over the summer to raise awareness and support and they have invited everyone to join them.

Bone Cancer Research Trust are using the month to run a few different campaigns and highlight the progress of their 2017-2022 strategy, The Biggest Ever Commitment To Primary Bone Cancer. They have also provided some very helpful infographics for people to share which highlight symptoms to be aware of.

Macmillan Cancer Support also have some incredibly useful resources on their website for anyone who wants to learn more about diagnosis and support for those living with Sarcoma.

Each year, about 3,300 people in the UK are diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma, and about 600 people are diagnosed with bone cancer.
This July we want you to help raise awareness and support.

Research Support for Nursing

A key theme of the Keele University Conference in March 2022 was that nurses are struggling to find support for research in their working environments.

Dr Andrew Finney, Senior Lecturer of Nursing & Post-Doctoral Researcher at Keele University's School of Nursing and Midwifery is founding a research group with the inclusive theme of Primary, Community and District Nursing Research.

The group would be open to academics from all institutions and all clinical colleagues across the disciplines and would hold a monthly meeting (on Teams) with the aim of:
  • Discuss opportunities for collaboration
  • Discuss opportunities for capacity building
  • Discuss key literature (together) where required
  • Provide short bitesize teaching (15 min) sessions where required
  • Providing support and feedback for research proposals, bids, fellowships, grants
  • Sharing research ideas
There would be no commitment to have to attend all meetings; people can drop into meetings when they are able to
If you would like to be a member of this group, please complete the short Microsoft Form
If you require any further information, please email

The Safeguarding Adult Review (SAR) in Rapid Time

Monday, 11 July 2022 at 1200-1300Hrs

The SAR In Rapid Time model was developed by SCIE as COVID increased pressure for a speedy turnaround of learning.

Increased volumes of SARs mean the pressure to find effective, proportionate ways of generating learning from case reviews is unabated. This session will outline key features of the approach, including how it is compatible with the refreshed SAR Quality Markers and some key learning points from the original pilots.

Two Independent Chairs with experience of commissioning the model will share their reflections and there will be an opportunity for participants to share relevant experiences.

Dr Sheila Fish, SCIE
Fran Pearson -  Independent SAB Chair
Fiona Bateman -  Independent SAB Chair

New Fit Note elearning is Available

Developed in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), the Fit Note elearning programme has been developed in response to changes in regulations which specify who can issue a fit note and how it must be done. It is recommended training for anyone who may now be able to sign fit notes.

Changes to who can issue fit notes took effect on 1 July 2022 and enable nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists to certify and issue a fit note. Doctors may also find the resource useful.

HEE has developed guidance to support the 4 new professions who can legally sign a fit note. The guidance includes information about the knowledge, skills, experience and training they are expected to have before certifying fit notes.

The guidance accompanies the elearning programme and can be accessed at :
Fit note – GOV.UK (

Before starting the Fit Note elearning sessions, learners are recommended to complete the Work and Health training in the elfh Hub, which provides a general introduction to this area: Work and Health – elearning for healthcare (

New Microsoft 365 Online Tutorials Now Available

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked in partnership with the Digital Learning Solutions (DLS) team to produce a series of tutorials for learners to engage and use Microsoft tools effectively.
Microsoft 365 Training features 35 bitesize tutorials covering a range of topics including OneDrive, SharePoint and 365 Accessibility. Each resource introduces the application and provides an overview of the functionality. In addition, learners will have the opportunity to get hands on practice in a simulated environment.
Learners will develop skills to enable them to communicate and collaborate more efficiently, access documents in shared workspaces, synchronise their work and access familiar applications.
The 5 minute training sessions are available on the elfh Hub for the wider NHS workforce and will also be accessible for learners via DLS training centres across the UK.
Learners will not be assessed on this training and can complete each tutorial at their own pace.
For more information and to access the tutorials, please visit the Microsoft 365 Overview programme page.
