CEDC Congratulates Governor Hochul


Kathy Hochul was sworn in as New York State's first female Governor on August 24th. CEDC has enjoyed a productive relationship with Governor Hochul in her previous role as Lieutenant Governor and her involvement in the Regional Economic Development Councils, and we look forward to continue working together to strengthen the local economy. Article from NY Times.

 

NYS has announced changes to the NYS COVID-19 Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant Program that will allow more small businesses to apply for funding. Please see Governor Hochul’s press release here

CEDC Releases Results of Broadband Study

CEDC has released data from a study requested by the Board of Supervisors on gaps in the County's broadband coverage in anticipation of new federal funds becoming available. The study was conducted by MC Fiber Services, and identified 1,100 unserved dwellings in twelve towns. Unemployment and Jobs
The latest unemployment rate for Columbia County is 4.2%, while the statewide rate is 7.4%. Last year at this time, the County rate was 9.1% and the State rate was 14.8%. There are now 29,100 private jobs in the county, compared to 28,000 last year. Click here for data from the NYS Dept. of Labor.



Housing Market
Data from the NYS Association of Realtors for the July of 2021 showed that Columbia County’s new listings were down 37%, closed sales were down 20.5%, and inventory was down 35.7% compared to this time last year. The median sales price was $355,400 compared to $370,000 last year. Click here for access the NYSAR reports.



Sales Tax Collections
Columbia County sales tax revenue in the Second Quarter of 2021 was $14.6 million, which is a 49.7% increase from last year. Statewide sales tax collections are up 49.2% year over year for the Second Quarter, and collections exceed 2019 levels from before the COVID-19 pandemic for both the state and county. Click here for data from the NYS Dept. of Taxation and Finance.

The SBA recently made a number of changes to streamline the PPP forgiveness process for loans of $150,000 or less.  The US Chamber of Commerce has updated their PPP Forgiveness Guide to reflect those changes.  Please click here to download the updated guide

The SBA has also updated the EIDL program. It increases eligibility and, critically, dramatically expands the use of proceeds to allow pre-payment of commercial debts. Our office will be scheduling a webinar to discuss the changes in detail soon. Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress Logo
Hudson Valley Patterns for Progress reported on the increasing Hispanic population throughout the region as identified in the 2020 US census. In Columbia County, the percentage of people identifying as Hidspanic increased from 3.7% to 5.8%. Read the report here.

The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program announced that George Timmons, Ph.D., Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at C-GCC, is one of 40 leaders selected for the 2021-22 class of the Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship, a highly selective leadership program preparing the next generation of community college presidents to transform institutions to achieve higher and more equitable levels of student success.  Provost Timmons Chosen for National Presidential Fellowship – CGCC (sunycgcc.edu)
