New York State Offering $800 Million in Small Business Recovery Grants
Empire State Development has launched its $800 million Small Business Recovery Grant Program. Grants of $5,000 - $50,000 will be made to small businesses and small not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations economically affected by COVID-19. Unemployment and Jobs
The latest unemployment rate for Columbia County is 4%, while the statewide rate is 7.7%. Last year at this time, the County rate was 8.6% and the State rate was 14.8%. There are now 29,200 private jobs in the county, compared to 28,400 last year. Click here for data from the NYS Dept. of Labor.
Data from the NYS Association of Realtors for the Second Quarter of 2021 showed that Columbia County’s new listings were 5.7%, closed sales were up 2.7%, and inventory was down 34.2% compared to this time last year. The median sales price was $405,000 compared to $287,500 last year. Click here for access the NYSAR reports.
Sales Tax Collections
Columbia County sales tax revenue in the Second Quarter of 2021 was $14.6 million, which is a 49.7% increase from last year. Statewide sales tax collections are up 49.2% year over year for the Second Quarter, and collections exceed 2019 levels from before the COVID-19 pandemic for both the state and county. The Columbia County Historical Society released “Hidden Hamlets,” the latest themed local road trip map in their Drive Through History series. See the new map here, along with the full series.
The New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) released an impact report showing that in 2020 they helped create and retain 6,637 jobs and achieved $994 million in company cost savings, increased/retained sales, capital expenditures, and funds acquired. The NY MEP operates through ten regional centers throughout the state, and is dedicated to fueling growth and innovation for manufacturers. Read more here.

Hudson River Valley Greenway announced that the 21st annual Hudson River Ramble event is back on this year after being cancelled last year. Held every day throughout September, the event features nearly 150 events for enthusiasts of the Hudson Valley culture and geography.
