Tree Planting TODAY!
Join the Underwood Hills Neighborhood Association & Trees Atlanta from 9-12
today for a tree planting. We will meet at 1800 howell mill road behind the shell station.
The 2.5-acre site is a 40' wide green-way located between the rear of residences on Ridgeway Ave and the commercial properties on Howell Mill Road, and includes a seasonal creek and native elderberry. A former Georgia Power easement, it was cleared for high tension power lines which have since been relocated north of I75. The area had become an overgrown, weed infested dumping site but has been cleared in preparation for reforesting the area to join up with the native forest of Underwood Hills Park.
Join us to hear Councilmember/Traffic Chair Andre Dickens and Georgia State Representative “Able” Mable Thomas

NCA is pleased to have Atlanta City Council Transportation Committee Chair, Andre Dickens, and State Representative Able Mable Thomas, as our featured guest speakers. They will be speaking 1/22, 7PM at the Northisde Church of God.

There may be no more on-going topic of discussion in this city than the issues related to transportation:  traffic congestion, pedestrian and bicycle safety, equity, MARTA and the BeltLine. Clearly, there are many factors involved in our transportation challenges. NCA, from its inception, has been a strong backer of additional funding for MARTA, its expansion and upgrades, as well as an early supporter of the BeltLine.

In 2017, Councilmember Andre Dickens championed the idea of a centralized transportation department within the city auspices. He put together a very diverse task force that resulted in legislation that received a unanimous council vote and was signed by the mayor, to ultimately establish the Atlanta Department of Transportation.  It should also be noted that Andre Dickens is a founding member of the NCA.
Georgia House Representative “Able” Mable Thomas is a longtime friend of the NCA.  Representative Thomas represents District 56 and has cumulatively served in the State House over 20 years.  She has fought for progressive issues ranging from living wages, economic development, Civil Rights and women’s health to name a few.  This former Atlanta City Councilwoman is at heart a community activist.  She will give us an update on this year’s state legislative session and take questions.
For the last several years at our January meeting, we honor Dr. King and have an “open mic” for anyone to talk about what Dr. King means to us personally.  It’s always a very reflective part of our meeting.

Both of our guests will speak for about 15 minutes then take your questions.
Transportation Commissioner Josh Rowan sends his regrets for having to cancel.  NCA will work with Commissioner Rowan to try to schedule him to speak at another NCA meeting later in this year.

The NCA welcomes the public and the great American Free Press.

Defoor Ave Accidents and what you can do to help
There has been much recent conversation regarding the speeding and recent accidents along Defoor Rd. Please note we have shared these concerns with City Councilmembers and they have also shared with recent Traffic Chairman, Joshua Rowan. Some updates for your reference:

- the upper Westside CID has applied and was granted a $600K grant to look into ways to help with traffic calming efforts along Defoor Ave and Chattahoochee Rd
- CBS46 did a recent segment along the Defoor Ave segments you can watch here:
- 1824 Defoor properties (that the Ashkouti’s own), are also engaged and have been sharing their concerns with City Council
- City Council had the divider lines repainted several months ago.
- The UHNA proactively requested a traffic study be done in 2018 to request traffic calming efforts be implemented along defoor ave and several other arteries. You can see the results here. Linking the November 2018 meeting minutes as well as the traffic studies that were referenced in post above

what you can do to help:
- come to the 1/22 NCA meeting where Andre Dickens can take your questions on this issue
- attend the UHNA meetings to hear what the upper Westside CID is going to help support us and when the readout will be of the Howell mill traffic study
- Join the UHNA traffic committee
- let us know your ideas! Send us an email at or contact our city council person, Dustin Hillis to raise your voice!
reminder: trash pickup comes Tuesday this week
Due to the MLK Jr Holiday today, trash will be delayed and picked up Tuesday, 1/21 instead. That means you have one more day to secretly take down your Christmas tree! ;)
