To our members,
We wanted to provide you with an update on the next steps around the process of implementing the recommendations from the Independent Review.
As you know, an independent appointments panel is now in place. The panel has developed a draft set of competencies (skills, experience and behaviours) that it believes the Gymnastic New Zealand Steering Committee (Steering Committee) needs to operate well, and is seeking your input on these competencies to find out if you have anything to add. They are also interested to hear what you think about the terms of reference for the Steering Committee.
The draft competencies and terms of reference can be found on our website. You can provide your feedback directly and anonymously over the next three weeks—feedback closes midnight Thursday 23 September. The appointments panel are also hosting hui to hear your thoughts and feedback, as follows:
- Session 1 - 11:00 am Wednesday 8 September
- Session 2 - 7:00 pm Wednesday 8 September
- Session 3 - 10:00 am Saturday 11 September
Please register to receive a link to a session.
The panel will consider feedback before finalising the Steering Committee terms of reference and role descriptions, and will then call for expressions of interest to join the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will operate under a set of guiding principles which include survivor voice and a commitment to upholding human rights.
The appointments panel is seeking to appoint a diverse membership in terms of lived experience including participation as a gymnast in competitive and high performance/elite gymnastics. These experiences may also be across a range of roles within clubs and reflect the Gymnastics New Zealand community, demographics, and geography. It will be an open and transparent appointments process. Anyone can put their hand up to be involved, and we will be promoting the roles widely to encourage this.
In addition to providing feedback on the competencies for the Steering Committee, the terms of reference, and potentially being a member of the Steering Committee, there will be other opportunities to be involved. The Steering Committee will identify and provide strategic oversight to various workstreams relating back to the key themes of the Independent Review e.g. wellbeing and health and safety, gymnast/athlete voice, coaching, judging, competitive pathways and high performance, operations of clubs and Gymnastics NZ, education, complaints process, and financial resourcing. The Steering Committee will be seeking help and input from many people and groups, including survivors, former and current athletes, clubs, coaches, volunteers, relevant experts, as well as representative bodies – both past and present – to provide practical input and support for the workstreams and, importantly perspectives on how to implement on the ground.
To get maximum reach, we have also released this information to the media today. We welcome your feedback, thoughts and ideas as we move towards implementing the recommendations and the cultural change required in our sport.
We appreciate your ongoing input and support.
