The international rule-based order is challenged on multiple fronts. The weakening of commitments to a rule-based international order is evident in a variety of contexts, as a profound mistrust permeates the system. Part of the answer to the deficit of trust lies in connecting multilateral processes to the interests, concerns, and perspectives of the people. The 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly has been grounded in the theme of making the multilateral system and the UN “relevant to all people.” This aspiration is central to the drive to increase collaborative efforts, build trust, and inspire a recommitment to multilateralism.
Ahead of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and to help chart the path forward, the International Peace Institute and the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly (PGA) will hold an interactive discussion on April 23rd. This forum will herald the UN General Assembly high-level event to commemorate the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace on April 24th, during which member states will discuss prevailing challenges and renew commitments to a rule-based world order and the multilateral system. IPI and the Office of the PGA will foster a conversation that takes stock of factors that may have contributed to the waning credibility of the multilateral system, as well as recent innovative practices to enhance its legitimacy. Participants will seek to agree upon ways to lay the foundation for a more trusted, people-centered multilateralism.
