Handmade holidays begin at BARN

A gift that springs from your own imagination and craftsmanship is always treasured. The BARN class schedule is full of opportunities to get hands-on for the holidays.

This Sunday you can learn to make a simple Sashiko Drawstring Bag. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese technique for embellishing textiles with even, white stitches in striking patterns. In the Print & Book Arts studio you can make beautifully marbled paper, which would be wonderful as gift wrap. The Glass Studio will show you how to make a Holiday Candle Lantern. Visit the Jewelry Studio to create a sweet little Beaded Wreath, a Holiday Snowflake Ornament or a Stamped Pendant Necklace. In the Welding Studio you can try plasma cutting and welding while making a 18" evergreen tree shaped out of steel. Kids can get their hands into the holidays with a special early-release Monday class for ages 8-13.

Do you have gluten-free guests coming for the holiday? Learn to make a traditional pumpkin pie without the gluten.  Or join in our monthly Bakealong where we'll have all the ingredients to make a regular pumpkin pie from scratch.

A BARN Gift Card is the perfect thing to tuck into a card or gift package. It can be used for classes, open studio time, or memberships, and is available in amounts from $25 to $600.

A gift from your hands is a gift from the heart. BARN has the teachers and the tools you need to make it happen.

Saturday, November 16, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Learn how to design and create original works using Computer Aided Design (CAD). This class is for beginners who want to explore the world of computer aided design. During this class, you will design and 3D print several original objects of your creation. With these skills, you can work at home and create more complex items. After creating additional items at home, you can bring them into the BARN ETA studio and 3D print them during open studio hours.

Some of the items we will create include customized key fobs, original button designs and holiday ornaments. Bring your imagination with you. Find out more and register here.

Sewing Lab: 5 Hand Stitches for Apparel and Other Sewing
Thursday, November 14, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Sewing machines are terrific, but every once in a while -- because the area you need to stitch is very small or because you need control, softness, or invisibility, or because you just like the look -- you need to stitch by hand. Fortunately, it is easy, and you are probably already using these stitches or variations -- even if you don't know their names.

This lab will cover 5 basic hand stitches (right-handed or left-handed stitching) and when to use them:

  • the back stitch
  • the prick stitch (it is a back stitch variation)
  • the slip stitch
  • the catch stitch
  • the fell stitch.

If there is time, as a bonus, we'll cover the overcast stitch! Find out more and register here.

Beyond Snapshots - Simple Steps for Creating Better Photos
Tuesday, December 10, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM

While there is nothing inherently wrong with snapshots, you can easily do so much better using a series of simple techniques introduced in this workshop. Creating more lasting images that capture the feeling you had when you took the picture is not hard. It just requires a little more thought before you press the shutter.

This workshop will give you the tools and techniques to take your pictures to the next level, independent of your camera from smart phones to DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex). Technical details will be avoided. Instead, we will explore how to see and capture the best images that memorialize and document an event, trip, people and place.

MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is the easiest kind of welding to learn and a technique with broad applications. This is hands-on introduction is the first of a four-part series. The class is aimed at students interested in trying MIG welding.

The goal at the end of the class is to feel comfortable with the operation of the welding machine and the MIG welding process. The class begins with a safety briefing. There is a brief introduction to welding theory and materials. There will be approximately an hour and a half of hands-on practice and guidance on technique.  At the end of class, students should be able to lay down a MIG bead and to be able to identify and remedy problems with the bead.  Many students will have advanced to exploring different types of weld joints or welding different thicknesses of material.

Wood for Turners: Find, Evaluate and Prepare
Saturday, November 16, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

“Where do you get your wood for turning?” -- Perhaps the most common question woodturners are asked by people new to the craft! In this class you will learn not only where to find or buy wood, but also how to evaluate wood for different projects; how to cut, preserve and store it (if it is green); how to lay out bowls, vessels and spindles on your stock to ensure good project success; and how to maximize the yield from your wood. Much of the wood local turners use is free “found” or “fallen” wood, and there are many details to learn about how, when and where to obtain these treasures.

Woodturners use bandsaws to prepare much of their stock, and are often challenged by irregular pieces of wood that require special safety tactics. In this class you will learn how to determine which approach you should use for a particular piece of wood, be it a log, a burl or a piece of spindle stock. Students who have taken Tool Safety II will gain hands-on experience cutting turning stock on one of the Studio’s bandsaws.

You are welcome to bring one or two pieces of wood you want to evaluate for turning stock.
