March 2019

2019 is off to a great start at PACFA! I am delighted to be re-launching the PACFA eNews in its new electronic format.

We will be bringing readers the latest PACFA news and a Professional Development calendar with events being offered by PACFA and others. All CPD events are endorsed as meeting PACFA’s CPD requirements.

The 2019 conference held from 22 to 24 February on WORKING WITH TRAUMA was a big success. We were sold out and the 320 delegates enjoyed a rich array of speakers on the conference theme. As so many people missed out on the conference, PACFA is putting on an Online Symposium in September on the conference theme, with a selection of seven presentations to be offered via interactive webinar, plus the two keynotes addresses.

PACFA President, Dr Di Stow, has been actively involved in the work of the Mental Health Reference Group which has been reviewing the provision of mental health services via Medicare, including the Better Access Initiative. We are working on a response to their recently released report which represents the best opportunity PACFA has had to advocate for PACFA-registered counsellors and psychotherapists to be Medicare providers.

We announced on 1 February that legislation has commenced in NSW enabling Clinical Registrants to apply to be Approved Counsellors with Victims Services NSW.  This follows on from our success in 2018 with recognition to participate in the Trauma Support Directory for the National Redress Scheme.  Acceptance to provide services is at the discretion of Victims Services NSW where there is a shortage of suitable providers.

The new year has also seen PACFA focus on psychotherapy, with the College of Psychotherapy Leadership Group consulting members about the definition of psychotherapy. Work on the definition is continuing. The Psychotherapy Working Party, established by the PACFA Board to consider the future of psychotherapy as a profession in Australia, is also making progress. The group is planning to consult psychotherapists within PACFA. This will enable us to consider the diversity of our members and their training as we develop standards for the training and formation of psychotherapists.

PACFA Operations Manager, Kim Smythe, is overseeing implementation of our new integrated Member Portal and website. This is an exciting development that will improve our members’ experience. We are crossing our fingers that the system will be ready in time for the next round of membership renewals in June. We will keep readers posted of further news.

The PACFA Board met in February and has been working on PACFA’s Strategic Plan for 2019-2020 which will be launched soon. The Plan includes a strong emphasis on organisational growth, member benefits, research, and our advocacy plan to increase professional recognition for our members.

I hope you enjoy the new format for eNews. This is part of a bigger plan to launch another new publication later this year – Psychotherapy & Counselling Today. This will be PACFA’s new professional journal which you can read about in this edition of eNews.
