Substituting bad habits: Making REACH work better for health, the environment and competitiveness

16 May 2019
Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the EU, Kortenberglaan 4-10, 1040 Brussels

REACH is the most ambitious chemical regulation in the world, trying to protect citizens from harmful chemical exposure. Although a lot has been done to restrict uses of harmful chemicals by means of substitution, to this day only 1 out of 191 uses of substances of very high concern (SVHC) has been denied authorisation.

This EU Green Week partner event, organised by the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU, the European Environmental Bureau and Fipra, reviews classification, authorisation and restriction of SVHCs under the term of the Juncker Commission. It looks at the numbers, recent case studies and takes a forward looking view towards a European strategy on creating a non-toxic environment. What follows is a set of recommendations for the next Commission.
