Appointment of Emilia Saiz as UCLG Secretary General 

In view of the retirement of the current Secretary General Josep Roig, the UCLG Executive Bureau meeting in Hangzhou has appointed Emilia Saiz as Secretary General of the World Organization, following an international recruitment process.

Hangzhou welcomes the UCLG World Council, putting Smart cities at the heart of innovation

From 6 to 9 December 2017, the City of Hangzhou, China, hosted the UCLG World Council and Executive Bureau meetings at the invitation of Xu Liyi, Mayor of Hangzhou in conjunction with the Forum on Smart City and Big Data organized by the City of Hangzhou and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

An enhanced space for policy debate through the Policy Councils

The UCLG World Council saw the inaugural sessions of the four newly created UCLG Policy Councils on Multilevel Governance, Resilience, the Right to the City, and Opportunities for All, which aim to increase political commitment on the major challenges faced by local governments around the world.
