Dean's Interprofessional Honors Colloquium Students Selected
Congratulations Rebecca Henry and Amy Groswald for being selected to be part of the Dean's Interprofessional Honors Colloquium.  They will participate in interprofessional education that will provide health professions students with an interactive seminar-based forum within which to explore the characteristics and implications of interprofessional practice and community health around the topic of health literacy in vulnerable populations across the lifespan. If you’re interested in participating in the program in the spring, please contact Jessica Houlihan, PA-C, at

Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry Film Showing 
The University of Kentucky's SSTOP Hunger: Sustainable Solutions to Overcome Poverty organization is hosting a screening of the award-winning Sundance documentary LOOK & SEE, a powerful cinematic portrait of Wendell Berry— farmer, activist, and undoubtedly one of America’s most significant living writers. View the trailer.  The film will be screened on September 13, 2017 at 6:30 PM in Kincaid Auditorium - 111 Gatton followed by a panel discussion with the producer and Mary Berry.  Tickets are FREE for students, but tickets must be reserved and printed here.  Tickets are $10.00 (plus $1.54 fee) for non-students.  (Link is embedded at left, but here is the direct link:

Gathering at the Table Community Dinner 
You’re Invited to Fill up at the Gathering at the Table Dinner on September 12th at 5:30 PM at the Food Connection at the 90 (440 Hilltop Avenue).  The dinner will include hands-on cooking, conversation about food systems, and (of course!) a delicious meal!  Come ready to learn how to cook well on a limited budget and get your hands dirty.  The dinners are ‘pay what you can’ with a suggested donation of $5 to support the local farmers.  Space is limited!  Reserve your spot today.  To ensure we order enough from our farmers, kindly RSVP by September 5th.

Join SSTOP Hunger: Sustainable Solutions to Overcome Poverty

Leadership Opportunity
The Campus Kitchen at the University of Kentucky is looking for foodies interested in decreasing food waste while building leadership skills.  Join the movement and serve as a shift captain this fall!  Times are flexible to fit your schedule. Apply online by Friday, August 25th. 

Research Opportunity: Go Big & Bring it Home
Do you want to help 14-15 year olds make healthier eating and drinking choices? Want to be part of a research study? If so, we need your help with a research intervention among High School students in Kentucky and North Carolina! The Goal of Go Big and Bring it Home - To increase fruit and vegetables purchases and consumption among adolescents in rural counties in KY and NC. We need you to send text messages twice a week, respond to their texts, and offer encouragement over an 8 week period. Student Research Associate: Local Foods in Cooperative Extension Program Inventory 
The Food Connection is looking for a research associate to work directly with the Executive Director, Dr. Lilian Brislen, to conduct an inventory of past and current programming related to local food systems.  The time commitment is 8-10 hrs/week for a semester with compensation from $1,500 - 2,000. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Send the following documents to

  • Cover letter that details your interest in this position (e.g. local food systems and/or cooperative extension), why you believe you are a qualified candidate, and what you hope to learn through this project.
  • Current resume that includes at least two professional and/or academic references
  • Writing sample of 250-500 words (any topic, and can be an excerpt from a longer work)

ACSM President to Speak at Graduate Exercise Science Seminar
Dr. Walter R. Thompson, President of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) will be speaking at UK's Graduate Exercise Science Seminar Series on Friday September 8, 2017 from 9-10am. Dr. Thompson is very engaged in the Paralympic movement and will also address issues related to exercise science/sports medicine for the elite athlete with a physical disability. Shadow at the Nutrition Clinic at Salvation Army
The Lexington Nutrition Clinic is held twice a month at the Salvation Army from 6-7:30 pm. We would like to invite undergraduate dietetic students to shadow the RD/MD to learn about nutritional counseling to the under-served and homeless population and see it in action. Please arrive by 5:30 pm for a brief orientation, dress professionally, bring your student ID, and sign in at the front desk. Girls on the Run: Inspiring Girls across Kentucky 
We are recruiting volunteers for our fall season that begins the week of September 11 and concludes with a 5K on Dec 2. Head coaches commit to facilitating both of the 75 minute practices weekly. The season is 10 weeks. Assistant coaches help support the head coach one or both practices and running buddies encourage the girls as they run/walk/practice weekly. 

We will train the students and they will then teach the curriculum weekly to 3rd-8th grade girls, that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. We have 2 four hour training's available to select from - Thursday 9/7 from 5-9:30 PM or Saturday 9/9 from 8 AM-12:30 PM.  Learn more and register online. For questions, contact or visit our website for further information.

Teach Cooking with 4-H
Assist with cooking demonstrations with youth at 4-H's Advanced Cooking Club at the Clark County Cooperative Extension Office. We meet for about two hours once a month on Thursday's, September through April.  This is a great (fun) way to get share your love of food! Contact Kayla to learn more:

This year’s Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) hosted by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics is in Chicago, IL from October 21-24. Volunteer at the Lexington VA Medical Center
Join our Golden Spoons feeding assistance team.  Volunteers will be assisting hospitalized inpatients during meal periods.  One-hour time slots are available at meal periods on each day of the week, Breakfast: 7:00-8:00am, Lunch: Noon-1:00pm, Supper: 5:00-6:00pm.  Interested volunteers may attend drop-in orientation currently held on the third Thursday of each month from 2:00-3:30 PM. If you have any questions or want to attend orientation, please contact Rita Burden, RD, LD at or office phone: 859-233-4511, Ext. 4327 for more information.

Teach Nutrition with At-risk Kids, Youth, and Adults

Job Opportunity: Part-time Tray Passing at St. Joe's
Typical shift consists of delivering meals to patient rooms, assisting on the tray line putting trays together, picking trays up from patient rooms, and assisting in the dish room.  Great opportunity to build a resume for dietetic internships and getting work experience in a hospital setting.  They are looking for weekday evening shifts from roughly 330pm to 830pm and some weekend availability with flexibility around class schedules.
