September Newsletter
Hello <<First Name *>>
Today I finally put the finishing touches on our Fall Inner Strength teaching schedule. Even as I was sending out the confirmations, two schools called to see if we could accommodate them too. It’s so heartening to connect with inspired teachers, counselors, and principals who are determined to liberate the potential of their students.
Philadelphia is committed to becoming the first “trauma-informed” city. What that means is that there is a large educational outreach initiative that is changing how the city works.
This includes in:
  • The District Attorney’s office improving the way individuals in the justice system and victims of crime are treated.
  • Public schools adding re-set rooms and stress reduction supports through a variety of initiatives.
  • Panels and day-long trainings offered at no cost on teen mental health, trauma-informed brain supports and other techniques.
And that’s just to mention 3.
At Inner Strength we are both conducting Secondary Trauma workshops for teachers, mentors, and staff to alleviate some of that stress and we’re also availing ourselves of the trainings offered so that we all cross-pollinate and learn the best of the science and supports to share with our students.
I’m inspired.
We are going into this year strong, with an emphasis on enhancing our foundational systems so we can meet the expanding need, work more collaboratively with the classroom teachers, and spend more time sharing what works in as many ways as we can.
Thank you for your enthusiasm and support. You make it possible for us to reach more than 1900 teens this school year.
Oh, and did I tell you were are expanding? Inner Strength trained instructors will be offering programs in Vermont and in Wyoming this semester!
Wishing you a reflective and inspired Back to School season,

The Inner Strength Foundation will participate in events in collaboration with the City Council, Department of Behavioral Health, Ethical Society of Philadelphia, and Furness High School.

Furness High School has students from 27 countries who speak 20 different languages. In honor of the UN International Day of Peace, Inner Strength is collaborating with Sarorng Sorn from the Department of Behavioral Health DBHIDS, City Councilman Mark Squilla, Principal Dan Peou and the Ethical Culture Society & Peace Day Philly to put on a school-wide performance and introduction to the year’s mindfulness program. We will demonstrate mindful awareness and compassion building techniques, and create a school wide pledge wall to make the school culture a compassionate and mindful one this year.

UN International Day of Peace @ Philadelphia City Hall
Known as World Peace Day, this UN-sanctioned celebration is observed annually in all UN Member States.

Every year the UN celebrates International Day of Peace with grassroots activities all around the world. The events culminate with a worldwide moment of silence at noon, in all time zones. As part of Philadelphia’s honoring of this important event, at a few minutes before noon on Sept 21, ISF founder Amy Edelstein will lead a Peaceful Breathing Contemplation at Philadelphia City Hall, leading into our shared moment of silence and wishes for Peace towards ourselves, Peace to our city, Peace to our world. This event is hosted by Peace Day Philly in collaboration with the student-led organization Push for Peace.

Amy Edelstein in Dialogue with Kori Hamilton Biagas
Exploring Racial Literacy

"Ask! Don’t Assume"

In this dialogue Kori Hamilton Biagas from JustEducators talks with Amy about racial literacy and education that uplifts. In their conversation they consider what racial literacy is, how to work in classrooms to lessen racial stress, and how to engage in a positive way to deconstruct our culturally inherited (and often outdated, false, misguided, and even dangerous) ideas about this issue.

“As long as there is a system in place that is perpetuating oppression for anybody, then we are all experiencing that oppression in some way.”

Kori Hamilton Biagas
