Gearing Up for the Holidays!

The air is getting crisp and the holiday season will soon be upon us!  Here at HFFI, we are busy getting ready for our exciting annual event, the 43rd Annual Candlelight Tour on December 14th and 15th!
We hope you will join us for a wonderful two days in Downtown Fredericksburg and take this opportunity to see some of the beautiful homes on Lower Caroline Street.  Amazing holiday decorations and stunning architecture will be waiting at each doorstep.
We also offer a deluxe ticket to the Candlelight Tour that not only provides you access to the homes during the day on Saturday or Sunday, but also an amazing option to view the homes by candlelight on Saturday evening and then mingle with friends at our annual Candlelight Tour Cocktail Party.  This year is certain to be as delicious and festive as ever!  Purchase tickets at or see the article below for more information on ticket purchasing locations.
We look forward to seeing you on December 14th and 15th.  Come help us enjoy the Downtown Fredericksburg Christmas spirit!

One Hanover Moves Forward

The developers of the One Hanover condominium project, a five-story, 64,000 square-foot building planned for the corner of Hanover and Sophia Streets, presented their plans for final design details at the October 14th Architectural Review Board (ARB) meeting.  The group discussed, among other things, the building materials and surface finishes to be used and the positioning of specific design elements, including windows, doors, balcony railings, gates, etc.  See the renderings for the building and floor plans in the ARB application here.
Following its discussion, the Board approved the project’s design plans by a vote of 5–2.  The two dissenting members expressed concerns about the building’s size, scaling, design, and materials, noting that it did not, in their opinion, blend with the City’s downtown Historic District.
The project proposal will now go to City Council for final approval.  Demolition of the three buildings on the site has already been approved by both the ARB and the City Council.

The Hot Club of San Francisco

Join HFFI on Saturday, November 16th for a trip to historic Culpeper.  We’ll be visiting the recently renovated historic State Theater to enjoy a viewing of The Hot Club of San Francisco! …an exciting show featuring vintage silent films set to live gypsy swing music.  Read more about the performance on the State Theater website.
Feel free to come earlier in the day and explore historic Culpeper with us!  Walking tours, restaurants, Civil War sites, and plenty of good shopping await.  Let’s support a fellow historic Virginia community and enjoy a day of exploration.
Anyone wishing to attend should buy his or her own ticket on the State Theater website.  If you’re interested in meeting up with other HFFI members before the show, please contact us at for more details.
Going solo and worried you won’t know anyone?  Don’t fret, just let us know it’s only you attending and then come meet the HFFI representative before the show—you’ll be sure to have made friends before the night is over.

Crismond's Update

If you’ve been downtown on Caroline Street recently, you may have noticed some work being done on the mid-twentieth century canopy supporting the sign above Crismond’s Shoe Store.  Crismond’s has been part of Fredericksburg’s shopping district for almost a century and, over that time, the building’s main façade has undergone a number of changes.
Engineers have assessed the canopy and are currently discussing a plan of action.  The managers of the project are sensitive to the history and significance of the building, and the surrounding streetscape.  They hope to arrive at a solution that preserves the unique character and integrity of the structure as well as the historic downtown shopping district.
