NSIV Member Spotlight - New England Hydropower

NEHC, the New England Hydropower Company, was started in 2012 in response to an overlooked market sector within the renewable energy hydropower industry.
“I was looking to do something new and innovative in renewable energy,” CEO Michael Kerr explains. “During my research I came across the Archimedes hydro-screw turbine. It’s a piece of generating equipment used for small-scale hydropower uniquely suited to the thousands of existing low-head dams in the United States.”
The Archimedes hydro-screw is environmentally friendly, and unlike many turbines, fish friendly — when installed in a river, fish can swim through it to migrate downstream and come out on the other side, completely unharmed. It also preserves... read more

IVIVA Adds a Senior Scientist

NSIV member company IVIVA Medical, profiled in our December Newsletter, continues to grow. In late January, Daniel Cheng joined IVIVA as a Senior Scientist. Dan recently graduated with his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University where he worked on 3D printing approaches to engineer vasculature and study vascular cell biology. He is excited to continue applying 3D printing approaches to the field of regenerative medicine, to engineer artificial kidneys, and to address unmet therapeutic needs. During the winter, Dan spends as much of his free time skiing or snowboarding as possible.

Welcome Dr. Cheng!

NSIV by the Numbers

North Shore InnoVentures tracks a variety of metrics that show our impact. Since 2008, NSIV has worked with dozens of companies as a non-profit technology business incubator helping biotech and cleantech startups increase their probability of success.

Our list of Graduates has reached 25 companies but many others have been helped along the way including two French companies that joined our Soft Landings Program last year for a limited stay in the U.S. There are currently 16 companies in the incubator.

Here are a few interesting metrics:
  • Diversity - 20% have been women-led startups; a recent count found 19 countries represented and 13 languages spoken at NSIV
  • Investment - Companies have raised $310 M
  • Patents filed - 215
  • Internships - 205 students
  • Job Creation - 301
Our office Impact Wall showcases these growing numbers.

seqWell in the News

NSIV graduate seqWell is making news and we wanted to share an update on its new partnership with Gencove.

Here are recent press releases covering the story from PRNewswire and Contract Pharma.

Opening the Gates of Innovation

Some of you may know the history of the Cummings Center in Beverly. When the  former United Shoe Machinery Corporation opened in 1905, it was the largest factory in the world and was built using a patented type of reinforced concrete that could support very heavy machinery.
Today, a visitor will see artifacts of that earlier time, particularly when walking through the 100 Building. This week NSIV was fortunate to receive a wonderful piece of that history, a large colorful gate valve handle that now proudly sits in our lobby. It was used as part of the infrastructure on the site for controlling water flow, perhaps at Shoe Pond. Be sure to check it out next time you visit us.
