What appears to be the end,

may really be a new beginning.

Please allow me to introduce myself: I am Anisha and, together with Kelly Springer, will be co-convener for Permaculture West this year. I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro but now call Australia home. Although a concrete jungle dweller all my life, I have always had a bucolic soul and have a long term goal of venturing to the countryside. I like to describe myself as reluctant Horticulturalist these days, since after doing my PDC with Terra Perma I have learnt to question everything... In many ways, Permaculture has ruined me for society in the way we currently describe it, hence I wish to contribute in making the alternative way of living mainstream. I am a rookie in all things committee so please bear with me while I learn from the elders, from the books, from experience and mistakes.
As I write this piece - my first ever contribution to the newsletter -  the news of Bill Mollison's passing arrives. What a life worth living! Yet, the everyday person knows not his name... Neither did I, not so long ago. How life changing can it be, to come in contact with simple, down to earth wisdom and to be in a position to value it? I wish to dedicate this newsletter in his honour and to the continuity of his teachings so that many more people can wake up to life.

We may be heading towards the end of the year but October promises to be a month of firsts! Permaculture Fest is at our doorstep! I would like to thank all the committee members who have been so generous with their time and effort to bring this giant to life! What a privilege to have such an amazing event, bringing you inspiring guests, all the best local knowledge, educational activities for kids of all ages, music.... it really is all in one place and free! I hope you can make it!

Following the Fest, we have the 13th Australasian Permaculture Convergence. APC13th has now been opened to attendees with or without PDC and we hope to see many of you there. Great tours and courses follow the APC, so check the program below if you haven't done so yet.

As I wait eagerly for warm weather to come – my tropical roots do not abandon me – I look forward to the many events that take place this month. Check it out on our events calendar.
Lots more to read about so I'll just leave you to it,

Anisha Fernandes da Rocha

The wildflower season in October and November signal the season of birth in the Noongar calendar. As the weather warms up and periods between rains become longer, the Noongar moved towards the coast to hunt frogs, crayfish, and tortoises. Balgas start to bloom and reptiles come out of hibernation. Read more HERE, HERE and HERE

Use and Value Diversity

"Don't put all your eggs in one basket"

Diversity offers insurance against the variations of our environment.

Summed up beautifully by the Formidable Vegetable Sound System's tune

Many Many

It is with great sadness that we at Permaculture West say goodbye to our founder and great leader Bill Mollison, who passed away peacefully in Hobart on 24. September. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends. May many trees be planted in his name. Read more about his life or pay your respects here and here.

WA’s inaugural Permaculture Fest will bring sustainability, community and wellbeing groups together to share their stories and inspiration with the public through an old fashioned face-to-face celebration of all things worth doing. Fest is a free event, but some activities need to be booked due to limited space.
