Message from the Dean

Repatriating Undergraduate Medical Education Accreditation

In December, a major step forward was taken for medical education in our country. Canadian medical schools have achieved greater autonomy over our educational standards and accreditation procedures, while at the same time continuing the close relationship with our American colleagues. This will ensure medical school graduates meet their respective countries' standards and are prepared for medical training on either side of the Canadian-American border.

The Faculty of Medicine has created a new decanal position — Associate Dean, Medical Education (Regional). The position will be integrated with the role of Vice President, Education at Trillium Health Partners, and will oversee medical education based in Mississauga and education at Trillium.

Medical Student Research Day 

Undergraduate Medical Education hosted its 28th annual Medical Student Research Day on January 28, showcasing 170 posters across nine research categories. Several students gave oral presentations and many received awards for their posters.

The U of T flag was flying at half-mast on all three campuses Tuesday in honour of Professor Brian Holmes, who was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1973 to 1980.

Chair, Department of Physiology

Professor Stephen Matthews will complete his first term as Chair of the Department of Physiology on June 30, 2014, and is not seeking reappointment. The Faculty has struck a committee to advise on the appointment of the next Chair. Learn more here.

Professor Karen Leslie will complete her first term as Director of the Centre for Faculty Development on June 30, 2014, and is eligible for reappointment. The Faculty and St. Michael’s Hospital have struck an advisory committee that will recommend either the reappointment of Professor Leslie for another five-year term or a search for a new Director. Learn more here.


Director, Centre for Interprofessional Education 

Professor Maria Tassone will complete her first term as Director of the Centre for Interprofessional Education on November 30, 2014. She is eligible for reappointment. The Faculty and University Health Network have struck an advisory committee that will recommend either the reappointment of Professor Leslie for another five-year term or a search for a new Director. Learn more here.

Associate Dean, Research (Dalla Lana School of Public Health)
