Box Top Collection
Dear NS families,

We are announcing another Box Tops collection that will directly benefit our teachers. They receive 50% of the value of the box tops collected in their classroom back for their classroom.

Both of our schools, Elementary and Secondary, are participating.

We would like you to send all current Box Tops  in bags or envelopes with teachers name and grade on it.

You can send them directly to the classroom or they can be deposited in a box by the office.

The deadline to submit them is May 20, Wednesday.

Our great volunteer Brie Ghinazzi is going to count every one of them and get them ready to be sent to the vendor. We average about 15000 box tops a collection, so Brie has a long night ahead of her. THANK YOU Brie!!!!

If you have any question please contact Jitka at

Miss Meridian's Outstanding Teen

Our very own 7th grader Abbey Hutchins has been awarded the title Miss Meridian's Outstanding Teen 2015. She has been busy speaking to classes here at North Star and throughout Meridian about bullying. She has been raising money for The Children's Miracle Network, and has been volunteering at various local events. She will go on to compete for the title Miss Idaho's Outstanding Teen in October. Good luck Abbey!
Lost and Found
NS Families,
Once again, our lost and found is overflowing with coats, jackets and other items. Friday, April 24th, we will be taking items to the Youth Ranch in Eagle.
Please encourage your child to stop by the lost and found (located at the back of the elementary cafe) to claim an item... or two :)

Helicopter Rides
You and a 2 guests can win a 15 minute opportunity to fly in a helicopter!
(You could probably even coerce your teacher to fly with you.)

Alpine Flight School has allowed us to auction 3 separate 15 minute rides.

Come Purchase $1 tickets
Every Friday until May 1st
$1 tickets will be sold in the cafe.
You may also purchase the $1 tickets
the evening of Jazz Night on May 1st.

(You do not need to be present to win.)

(Alpine Flight School came to kindergarten's Transportation Adventure Day. Tod is an experienced pilot and was eager to share his passion--additional flight time can be purchased.)
Love and Logic
During one of my parenting presentations several years ago, I saw that a teenage girl was sitting in the front row with her mother. I was explaining how to help children diffuse the power of bullies and noticed that this young girl seemed transfixed on what I was saying. A couple of weeks later I was to discover why. She wrote me this letter:

I was the only child in the parent seminar. After I listened to your presentation, I started seeing everything from a different perspective. There’s this girl who has bullied me every way she knows how. Up until now I've allowed her to do just that. I was at the point where I didn't want to live anymore.

I watched your video and I felt so much better. I started hanging out with different people, and now I couldn't be happier. If she says something negative to me, I remember, "It's about her, not me!" She no longer has power over me, because I now have the tools to cut it all off.

Thank you so much for helping me!

From that evening's presentation and video, Gillian learned two vital skills for diffusing the power of difficult, critical, bullying people:
1.       Change how you think about the comment or action.
Remember, if it's mean, nasty, or hateful, it's coming from a place of pain and fear in the instigator.
2.       Change how you respond.
Pick a response that shows that you are not going to sink to the level of the critical person. Show your inner strength by not letting the bully get you to respond in an immature or desperate way. Gillian learned to say: "I'm sorry you feel that way." Then she walked off.
You can empower the children you care about to feel in control and empowered when confronted by a bully, just like Gillian.

This June in Vail, Colorado, I'll be presenting these concepts and many more at the Love and Logic Educator & Parent Retreat. If you can't join us this summer, you can learn more from my book, Words Will Never Hurt Me.

Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.
Sally Ogden
