Calcutta - The most Indian of Indian Cities

Nothing: no pictures, no travel book, no enthusiastic account by friends, can prepare you for the dazzling, infuriating, mesmerising, thrilling complexity of India.

Trundling through the arid countryside, on the way to the rural camps, you see women in vivid saris working on the roads, carrying bowls and bundles and babies, keeping the country going. Long afterwards you retain a vivid sense of landscape and buildings, as well as the people: the real India passing by.
