TouchPro International Newsletter

Greetings from David Palmer

[David Palmer Picture]I hope you are all having a happy Spring, oops, I mean Winter, no, today it is Spring. Oh heck, I give up. I need a massage for all the weather whiplash this year.

This will be a short newsletter with a few self-serving items about what is happening in the TouchPro world.

France update

Our affiliate in France, Xavier Court Training (English version), just began training its fourth group of students since launching the world's first country-wide certification in chair massage last November. That first group will complete its final (and 7th) module of training in June. We are so proud!

Another road trip

At the end of March I travel to Baltimore, MD, to teach chair massage technique and marketing at the Holistic Massage Training Institute, March 30 to April 2nd. Most of the seminars I am teaching this year are within driving distance of my residence in Connecticut so, if you know anyone on the East Coast (Newington CT, Quebec City) interested in learning the most popular chair massage in the world, send them our way.

Amma on the table in the islands

The roots of TouchPro chair massage are in a traditional Japanese one-hour table massage Kata taught for 2 decades in San Francisco at my now-defunct school The Amma Institute. If you are interested in combining a trip to beautiful Trinidad with a two-week intensive training of the one-hour table Kata, please contact me soon (dp@touchpro.com) as space is limited. TouchPro's Caribbean affiliate is planning a course from August 13th to the 26th.

While versions of this table Kata are still taught regularly in Quebec and Paris, this is a rare opportunity to study the work directly with me in English. If you think the 15-minute Kata is amazing, wait until you experience the hour-long table version. Read the last item in the newsletter for a good description of the experience.

Hot off the press!

Yesterday USPS delivered my author's copy of a new textbook that contains a chapter I co-authored with the inimitable Jean Barlow. The book is Touch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy: An Ethical and Clinical Guide. Our chapter,Teaching Positive Touch: A Child-to-Child Massage Model for the Classroom, details the history, benefits and implementation of the seated massage program that Jean has developed for primary schools.

Touch in Child Counseling book coverI was honored to be part of this groundbreaking project initiated by our friend and colleague, Janet Courtney, Ph.D., and her husband, Robert Nolan, Ph.D., both lifelong child advocates and therapists. This is the first academic text on the therapeutic value of professional touch with children and I hope it triggers many new discussions about this too-often taboo topic.

For the launch, check out the promotional discount Rutledge Press is running: 20% off the price of the hard or softcover versions of the book. The eBook version is also available at Amazon. If you are affiliated with a massage school, you may be able to preview the eBook version for free by filling out their Complimentary Copy form.

In closing...

Let me leave you with a quote from one of my mentors, Ken Wilber. If you substitute the word "massage" for the word "art" you will read the best description of the transcendent nature of simple structured touch I have ever encountered.

"Great art [massage] grabs you, against your will, and then suspends your will. You are ushered into a quiet clearing, free of desire, free of grasping, free of ego, free of the self contraction. And through that opening or clearing in your own awareness may come flashing higher truths, subtler revelations, profound connections… Great art [massage] suspends the reverted eye, the lamented past, the anticipated future: we enter with it into the timeless present; we are with God today, perfect in our manner and mode, open to the riches and the glories of a realm that time forgot, but that great art [massage] reminds us of: not by its content, but by what it does in us: suspends the desire to be elsewhere."
--Ken Wilber, The Eye of Spirit

David
