£1 million Lottery Boost for Chase Park
Members of Friends of Chase Park and representatives of Gateshead Council celebrate the announcement of £1 million Lottery funding.
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund have awarded just under £1 million (£922,900) to local community group Friends of Chase Park (FoCP) and Gateshead Council to take forward plans that will see them work together on the restoration and improvement of Chase Park in Whickham.
This is fantastic news for the group which was established in 2009 and has worked tirelessly towards this objective since then. In Summer 2012 – Chase Park won a national Flora competition, resulting in installation of junior play equipment. This new award will mean that Whickham residents will be able enjoy many more facilities including remodelling and enhancement of the existing toddler play area, resurfacing of tennis courts and new facilities to include improved teenage play and skateboard area.
Plans over a three year period also include a restoration project for the windmill, entrance gates, paths and ornamental gardens, installation of an outdoor gym and trim trail, development of community garden and orchard and installation of new street furniture, signs and interpretations/artworks of heritage points of interest.

A development funding award of £66,000 was made in Spring 2014 and over the last year the Friends of Chase Park have worked closely with Gateshead Council to develop the bid for funding from the HLF.  The master plan was also drawn up in consultation with local award-winning landscape architects Southern Green.
Chair of Friends of Chase Park, Alan Scott said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this HLF and Big Lottery Fund grant and look forward to working with Gateshead Council and Southern Green to see the plans for the renaissance of our beloved Chase Park come to fruition. Returning the park to its former glory will be something the whole community can be proud of for many years to come.
“So many people have worked hard to get us where we are today and I give huge thanks to everyone involved for the effort and contributions made. Who would have dreamed we would be in this position as we set out on our journey all those years ago.”
Cllr. Peter Craig, Founder of the Friends group said “I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible, with a special thank you to the individuals who have stuck with this project since the start.
“It has taken us 6 years to reach this point and we are delighted that our bid has been successful, so that a rejuvenated Chase Park can continue to play an important part at the heart of our community.”

Sunniside Community Orchard growing well
John McClurey Kingsway Orchard June 15 1
Cllr John McClurey at the Sunniside Community Orchard.
The community orchard set up by Sunniside’s Lib Dem Councillors at the top of Kingsway, opposite Clover Hill, is doing well. The trees have been in blossom so hopefully there will be fruit in the summer and autumn.
“This area was left unused for years,” said Cllr John McClurey. “We set up the orchard with a small grant from the Local Community Fund two years ago so that we could create an asset for people living here.
“Our aim is to plant more trees in coming years but to do so, we need to raise the funds to do so. There will be no money from Gateshead Council.
“We would like to set up a Friends of Kingsway Orchard community group to take forward the project. If you would like to join in, please email me on or call me on 0191 4960816.”
Remembering Lisa Burbidge
Lisa Burbidge memorial June 15
Residents have been shocked and saddened to hear of the tragedy that happened in Tunisia and our thoughts are with Lisa Burbidge’s family and friends. Together, in consultation with family members, discussions have been held with appropriate individuals within the Whickham community and a focal point has been set up in the village for floral tributes to be laid. It is on the triangle of grass at the bottom of Church Green.

It is believed  one of Lisa’s favourite places was sitti
ng with her husband on the middle bench on Church Green overlooking the flower beds there. A sign is in place to indicate the area which is being used. It has been tended to and will continue to be kept tidy by Planting Up Whickham volunteers. This is a temporary memorial until the funeral and until a more permanent memorial can be considered with the family.
Swalwell big lunch event
Swalwell Community Group will be holding its own fundraising event to raise money for the Swalwell Christmas Tree on Saturday 8th August in Swalwell Park. Bring you own picnic. There will be music and entertainment, stalls, activities for children and
refreshments. Please contact Cllr. Sonya Hawkins for further details.
No longer bridging the gap
A1 improvement works June 15 (7)
You may have noticed something missing when you drive along the A1 between Lobley Hill and Dunston. The footbridge that crossed the road from the bottom of Chiltern Gardens was demolished in early June as part of the work to upgrade the A1.

Local Lib Dem campaigner Daniel Duggan said, "The upgrade to the A1 is crucial to helping reduce congestion and pollution on our own doorstep. That meant the old footbridge had to be demolished at allow for the road to be widened. A replacement bridge will be built as part of the improvements."
Lib Dem buffet
Are you a Lib Dem supporter? If so, join us for a free buffet at Marley Hill Community Centre on Friday 3rd July, 6.30pm - 9.30pm to chat to us about the party, and the issues on which you think we should be campaigning. There will also be a pay bar.
