JUNE 2015
Dear ODs
The Bishops 1st XV beat Rondebosch this past Saturday 36-23. Equally successful was the 2015 UK OD Dinner. Just under 100 of us sat down to a splendid dinner at the RAF Club in London. Numbers were up on last year reflecting a greater engagement with the ODU and this is most encouraging.

A link to the dinner photos, speech summaries and guest list was sent out just after the event, but for those of you who might have missed it, click on the photo to have a look.
At the annual Oxford University RFC Dinner each year, three honours are given: Coach's Player of the Year, Club Man of the Year and Blues Player of the Year (Players' Player).  The dinner took place last month. Zandy MacDonald (F, 2007) was awarded two of the three honours:   Blues Player of the year 2014/2015 and also the Club Man of the Year 2014/2015.
Zandy completes his two year Masters Degree in a month's time before setting out for the real world. In the meantime, he has been selected to play for Penguins against the German national team this month.

Well done, Zandy.
The ODs take on the Old Tonbridgians on Sunday 12th July at the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club

But we are still two golfers short.

If there are any OD golfers out there who would like to join a potent OD team to demonstrate to the OTs how the game should be played, please contact either Alex Price or me as soon a possible. OD golf shirts provided!

I'd also encourage as many non-golfing ODs to come along as well to provide morale-boosting encouragement or just sit in the clubhouse and await our returning (and hopefully triumphant) warriors.

The first tee-off is at 9.30am and lunch will be served before the second round starting at 2.30pm.
Henley Royal Regatta

We had originally planned two events to coincide with the HRR, one a semi-formal lunch on the opening day ( 1 July) and the other an informal family braai on the river banks on Sunday 5th July. There are not enough people signed up for the braai so Rob Johnston and I have decided to go ahead with only the lunch on the 1st. My apologies to ODs who had RSVP'd for the braai - we'll plan for this again next year.
Bishops at the Edinburgh Festival

Robert Murray (S, 1968), our OD secretary in Scotland writes:

Dear Fellow OD

As I’m sure you know by now, Bishops will be at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival. There are 2 Bishops shows: Cold Stone Jug, based on the autobiographical book by Herman Charles Bosman, and Simply Blue, the a cappella choir. I would like to invite you to meet me at one or both shows, on Saturday 8th August. Both shows are at Venue 18, Sweet Grassmarket, at the Apex International Hotel, on Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2HS. Cold Stone Jug starts at 12.40pm, and Simply Blue at 7.45pm.

We will meet in the venue hotel before and after the shows; the web page for the bar/restaurant is

I’ll be going to both shows, so if you can join me for drinks/snacks after Cold Stone Jug at about 2.15pm, or before the Simply Blue show any time after 6pm, or stay on for a late meal after the Simply Blue show, that would be great. If you can be there, please book your own show tickets.  Then let me know if you can stay on for the late meal, and I’ll make sure we have a table booking for 9pm.

Hoping to see you there!

Robert Murray

Friday, 14th August:
If you can't get to Simply Blue in Edinburgh, then they will get to you in London. They will be performing at a concert especially for ODs and their families and friends. Venue to be confirmed.

Saturday, 12th September:

Oxford Family Day

Dr Chris Winearls (G 1968) is a Fellow of Jesus College Oxford. Oxford has been his home for many years. He will be one of our guides around the splendours of the University in the morning. Lunch will be in Exeter College and after some punting on the Cherwell in the afternoon, we'll finish with early-evening drinks (and a tour of the College's legendary gardens) on the lawns of New College

Invitations for both these events will be going out next month

The Scheme is gathering momentum and has now been "advertised" (see HERE) to the ODs at large through last week's weekly news bulletin out of Cape Town. If you would like to offer yourself as a mentor please do so through this LINK. If you would like to take advantage of some mentoring, please get in touch with me.

Again, thank you so much to all those UK ODs who have signed up as mentors and to those who are already providing advice and guidance to fellow-ODs.

Architects for Dubai

Related but different, John Clemow (F, 1968) would like to talk to any OD who is a qualified architect who might be interested in working in Dubai. If that's you, please email John by clicking HERE.
Once again, any ODs in the area on the last Thursday of the month (this Thursday, 25th June) should feel free to drop into Ye Olde Mitre, 1 Ely Place, EC1N 6SJ where the ODU tab will be open from 6pm-8pm. The pub gets busy so locating fellow ODs is sometimes tricky (as is finding the pub itself) so look around for me or call me on 07818014394. No RSVPs necessary. Come if you can anytime between 6pm and 8pm.
Lastly and sadly, we say goodbye to Peter Regnier (O, 1961) who died in May after a long illness.

Michael Robottom (W, 1960) wrote: "Peter had been in poor health for a few years and had to undergo a bone marrow transplant a while ago. A concert in celebration of his life was held at St.Mary’s Church, Fetcham, Surrey on Wednesday 10th June."

The ODU sends its sincerest condolences to his wife Claire

With kind regards

Nicky Bicket
